He’s Done It!!!!

Matt Rutherford is the first person to solo, nonstop circumnavigate both North America & South America! He sailed over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel at 10:48 EST this morning, crossing his original track and completing his challenge!

Matt’s plan is still to make his first landfall this Saturday the 21st of April at noon in Annapolis. Anyone and everyone is invited to help welcome him home.

Congratulations to Matt!

By this time next week you’ll be a national figure. You’ll no longer be “our” Matt in our little blogging community….but a real world hero right up there with Joshua Slocum and Robin Knox-Johnson. We hope you seriously consider writing a book…..although I’d REALLY love to hear it “raw” from your own lips. Your story has really captivated me … along with godaloneknows how many others. 41. Don Schmidt says:

As a young boy many years ago I used to so love reading the stories and adventures of Perry, Byrd, Scott, Amundsen and Shackleton. Reading your very interestingly written blog brought me back to those same feelings of living those adventures vicariously. I put you in the same class of bravery, fortitude and determination as those explorers of long ago, the likes of which we thought we would never see again. Congratulations for a most amazing accomplishment!

  42. Eamonn Glasgow Scotland says:

Matt I’ve been watching your progress since Mrs. Macintyre told us about the site.
    Congratulations!!!!

  45. Maartster says:

As Vega owners we have some appreciation on what it is like to be in a small boat in a dark stormy sea at night. But it is beyond our imagination what you must have gone through doing this by just by yourself, for almost a year, with failing equipment and a leaking boat. We really enjoy the way you write, your self-reflection and modesty. But you are right in writing that you will never be Shackleton or Crean. They did not go solo, they did not use a 27inch boat, nor did they raise any funds while pursuing their endeavors.

  46. Bronson_boss says:

  98. St. Brendan says:

By signing US Sail petition I failed short. He is not only Sailor of the week but Sailor of the Year first of all. He will be nominated for Royal Cruising Club Blue Water Award.
I have been piloting him all the way through Northwest Passage then after it more challenges erupted. Foul weather of Bering Sea and Gulf of Alaska then equatorial ITCZ doldrums, more work to set proper route through Horn. Found perfect window just for that. South Atlantic was chosen for safety while later I started falling slowly apart. He had won all that with CRAB.

    • Marlowe/Mom says:

      Dear St. Brendan,

You are the most sincere and dedicated vessel a mother could ask for her son! Thank you for carrying him the distance! Thank you for giving your heart and soul these many miles! Your bulkheads have shifted, and you carried on. Your mast stood! Your sails are blown but persevered. Your dainty bottom — barnacle encrusted and sore — leaked a little as befits your age. How you remained whole under great strain is due to your great spirit and the watchful, skilled hands of your captain!

I, Marlowe Macintyre, also known as Matt’s Mom, hereby award St. Brendan the title of “The Little Boat That Could”.

  99. Ghizlane says:

Welcome back! I can only imagine what it would be like to be on land after such an extended period out at sea. Thank you for documenting all of it, it has been an excellent read that has had me on the edge of my seat in the past month since I learned of your blog.

Get some rest, and surround yourself with loved ones.

    Congratulations! :)

St Brendan is moving again! A little faster and straighter than the last few days. Looking forward to seeing it in Annapolis on Saturday.

My son learned to sail many years ago from Brendan Sailing in Annapolis – an organization that teaches the learning disabled the joys of sailing. It was a life changing experience for him, and sailing has remained a large part in his life. With Matt’s support, CRAB sailing is reaching the physically challenged. St Brendan must be looking down on his heritage on the seas with profound joy.

Fair winds and following seas on your next adventure! I can’t wait!

  110. I just noticed that the “Matt’s Challenge” fund-raising picture still only shows $68.8k. SURELY, that’s because they haven’t updated it at C.R.A.B.???? i hope. SURELY, with Godspeed’s recent Matching Funds offer there should have been an onslaught of donations…. RIGHT? If not…. COME ON PEOPLE! This is a HUGE F***ing ACCOMPLISHMENT THAT MATT HAS DONE. OPEN THE WALLETS A LITTLE, EH?
